Indiana University – Jacobs School of Music

The Jacobs School of Music project involved both expansion and renovation of existing facilities to reinforce its role as a leading institution for teaching, performance, and musical scholarship. One of the major components was the Centennial East Studio Building, a new structure incorporating teaching studios, rehearsal rooms, practice rooms, offices, and graduate student spaces. Alongside that, there were additions to the existing performance and rehearsal facilities, and refurbishment of performance halls to improve usability and experience for both students and audiences. The project was designed to accommodate modern pedagogical needs, technological demands, and to align with long-term institutional goals for excellence in music education.

Construction & Renovation Experience

On the construction side, the project included large new building work as well as careful integration with existing structures. The new studio building required high-quality acoustics, precise spatial organization for sound isolation, climate control, and lighting suited for both teaching and recording. Rehearsal and performance spaces were upgraded with improved seating, finishes, ADA accessibility, and upgraded audio-visual and technical support systems. Structural and mechanical systems in older areas were overhauled: HVAC, electrical, and plumbing updates ensured reliability and comfort, while maintaining or improving aesthetic integrity. Coordination among multiple disciplines—acousticians, theater specialists, structural engineers, MEP contractors—was essential to deliver both high performance and high quality finish.

Impact & Benefits

The improvements deliver significant benefits: enhanced learning and rehearsal environments that support student and faculty performance, training, and creative work; better audience experience due to improved acoustics, comfort, and accessibility; and more efficient and reliable building systems that reduce maintenance burden and operating costs. The project also expanded capacity for teaching and practice, allowing more flexible scheduling and better support for advanced programs. In the longer term, the renovations and additions strengthen the institution’s ability to attract talent, host performances, and remain competitive among peer music schools, while also demonstrating responsible stewardship of resources through modernization rather than complete replacement.
